Our story
We are Catalina and Thor, a couple from Sweden. Two months ago we quit our jobs to embark on a once in a life-time journey taking us through the African, Asian, and European continents. As of writing this, we are on the last leg of our 2 month trip through Kenya and Tanzania and boy has it been a lesson in adventure on a budget.
We both always dreamed of sitting doe-eyed in the presence of Africa's notorious Big 5 and untamed landscapes. We did, however, forget one crucial step. Researching prices. An unforgiving mistake for any long-term travellers! Upon arriving in Arusha we quickly learned that safaris are far more expensive than we thought and our budgets simply couldn't handle it. Disgruntled and dismayed we thought our Tanzanian adventure dreams were at a close. We started planning for defeat and an early departure. Then we met Martha.
A dream coming true
Martha has been our host and friend in Arusha and her day-to-day involves operating a budget-friendly safaritour agency. What were the odds, right? Martha kindly negotiated a very reasonable price for what would come to be an epic two day adventure.
We chose to do a one day safari at the incredible Ngorongoro crater. The Ngorongoro is part of UNESCO’s seven wonders and it’s not hard to find why. Besides meeting a wide variety of animals and birds by the water, the nature itself is stunning with clouds cascading down big green hills surrounding the crater.
But for us, the adventure started already the day before where we travelled to a camping situated right outside of Manyara National park. The camping itself was a wonderful experience as it’s environment is green and serene, with a viewpoint of the National park close to the accommodation. In the evening, we were served a delicious meal together with other groups going on safari and enjoyed a fun entertainment show with drums, dancing and acrobatic performances. After hanging out with other fellow travelers, we went to bed early to be well rested for the coming morning.
At seven, breakfast was served and after filling ourselves up with energy our tour guide for the day picked us up and the safari adventure started. The drive to the Ngorongoro was bumpy and almost mystical as we drove through the early morning fog, with the view of huge trees and mountain hills. Well at the crater, we were suddenly surrounded by all sorts of animals that we had never seen in real life before. Flocks of buffalos, wildebeests, gazelles and zebras were standing close to us by the road - not seeming shy of our wide eyed gaze. As we got further in, we also spotted lions, elephants and hippos (with her two babies!). To get so close to these incredible animals in their natural habitat felt like a dream come true. We spent the whole day in Ngorongoro, soaking up every moment.
In the afternoon it was time to head back for the rather long journey to Arusha. However, since we were coupled with other fellow travelers the journey back was fun as we spoke about life and what we had experienced that day. Still now, a few days after having been on this adventure, we know it is a moment we will carry with us. We would really recommend it to anyone interested in experiencing raw nature, flora and fauna and to definitely do it with Marthas tour agency - she will give you an unforgettable adventure!
Other tips for budget-traveling in Tanzania
Our time in Africa certainly doesn't make us experts but we have learned a lot. So, here are a few tips and tricks:
Local transportation
If you are not afraid of rubbing shoulders with strangers, then the Daladala is for you. You will save a lot of money using this mode of transport.
If you are going a shorter distance and like a bit more adrenaline then why not hop on a bodaboda (motorbike)?
Negotiate and haggle
In Kenya and Tanzania almost every price is negotiable, especially if you are a mzungu (foreigner in swahili) because they will hike up the prices! Always ask a local how much taking local transport or buying your desired items at the market will cost. That way you ensure a more fair price. Never haggled before? Then it is an amazing opportunity to learn!
Try local food
We know a traveller’s belly is a legitimate concern, but do not let it hamper you from exploring local Tanzanian cuisine like Chips Mayai or a variety of stews. Beside tickling your taste-buds there are plenty local resturants in Arusha that allows you to feast at a very affordable price.
All in all, we highly recommend visiting Tanzania for anyone looking to experience nature and animals close-up, friendly people and amazing food. Do not miss out on it and be sure to book your tours with Kili Tanzania Tours!
Best wishes,
Catalina and Thor
